Addis Ababa, June 12, 2021 (FBC) – President Sahle-Work has expressed condolences over the death of the veteran Ethiopian Scholar and Researcher Professor Getatchew Haile. Professor Getatchew Haile passed away at age of 90 yesterday.
President Sahle-Work said that Prof Getatchew Haile conducted detailed researches and explorations on ancient Ethiopian Ge’ez manuscripts and translated nation’s invaluable historical documents in to international languages, and turned others to local ones. Professor Getatchew has contributed substantial academic and research works to the generation, the president said. The President further expressed condolences to family, students, colleagues and the loved ones of the renowned professor.
The professor had been serving his country in philology, especially in microfilming essential and oldest Ge'ez books. He saved several parchment books and other documents written in Ge'ez language about country’s history, biographies of previous leaders, traditional medicine and most importantly liturgical manuscripts.
Among his books are Dekike Estifanos, Andafta Lawgachihu, Yeabba Bahiry Dirsetoch, Bahire Hasab, Ethiopian Studies in Honour of Amha Assfaw, Geez Baqallalu and so on.
